Always conduct grading at the activity level (within the activity itself). Grading at the activity level follows Moodle’s design and decreases the risk of potential errors. Grading within the grader report can cause grade overrides.
Potential Issues with Grade Overrides
Grade calculation discrepancies (grading aggregation issues in the grade book)
- An overridden grade typically does not update automatically within the total. This can cause issues with the student’s grades not totaling correctly.
Locked submissions preventing students from re-submitting
- Students cannot submit to an assignment and instructors can no longer grade a student’s submission outside of the Grader report.
Course overview issues
- Course will display incorrect data to instructors about which items are graded or need to be graded.
Overriding a Grade
- Select the Grades link in the Navigation block.
- The Grader report opens. This report shows all student grades awarded in a course, as well as the final grade. Student names appear in the left-hand column, and grades appear to the right.
- Select Turn editing on in the upper-right corner of the page.
- To edit a grade, select the solid-line box corresponding to the correct student’s row and the correct grade column. Enter the grade in this box.
- You may use the dotted-line box to provide feedback. Press Enter on your keyboard when finished.
- Alternately, select the Edit icon in the correct row and column to access additional grading options and a larger feedback window.
Indication of Grade Overrides
A grade override is typically symbolized by a tan-shaded box in the Grader report.
Removing Grade Overrides
- Select Course administration within the Administration block, and then select Grades.
- Select the Turn editing on button in the upper-right corner of the page.
- Select the Edit icon in the top, right-hand corner of the student’s assignment from which you wish to remove the override.
- Remove the check mark in the Overridden box on the Edit grade page.
- Select Save changes.
